Since the last issue of Captains Log the Explores have been busy with summer activities like Climbing, Hiking and boating with the highlight of the year being Summer Camp.
This year we travelled with the Scouts to the Norfolk Broads, camping at Decoy Broad. The main focus of camp was boating and throughout the week the Explorers spent a lot of time sailing. As well as improving their own sailing skills they did a good job teaching the younger Scouts. The lads also really enjoyed a days shooting at a windmill near Cromer and then returned later in the week to abseil down off the top of the mill. Activities also involved a powerboat trips, a visit to ‘Pleasure wood Hills’ theme park and many others. On behalf of me and all the Explorers I would like to say a big thank you to Trev, who organised yet another brilliant camp.
Since camp we have had an influx of new Explorers arrive from scouts, with the likes of Edwin, Nathan, Sam, Dom, Josh, Jonathan and Luke joining the unit. Their first challenge will be to do us proud in the County Flag competition. The new format involves a 6 mile walk out to a base where they will then have to cook up top notch three course meal using only equipment the have carried with them. Then during the evening they will have to walk the 6 miles back via a number of checkpoints. Let’s hope they do better than last years team who failed miserably, serving up a meal of raw chicken and mush.
We have also, recently run a climbing day up at Birchen Edge in Derbyshire. The lad’s conquered 7 climbs ranging from difficult to severe, and a good day was had by all. Finally over the autumn period we are looking forward the National Scout Air Rifle Championships at Bisley in October and our annual trip to Spain later on in November.
